Darcy
They won't let me in the room. I can't even be told if he's alive or not. I'm not family so they turn me away more than once. I sit in the waiting room with my face in my hands wanting to scream. "Who are you," the nurses kept asking.
I wasn't sure how to respond. What could I even say? We went on a few dates while he was a ghost? The truth is, I'm no one. Only the guy who saved his life.
Someone taps me on the shoulder, and I glance up into soft blue eyes. The nurse smiles. "The family is here if you wish to speak to them or you can come back tomorrow."
I've been here for hours, pacing the waiting room. Unable to leave. Calebâs here so it's the only place I want to be. Rubbing my eyes, I stand from my chair. "Thank you."
She nods and a young man who can't be older than thirty glances my way when a cop points in my direction. I don't have to walk to him. He slowly treads my way, his brows furrowing. "I understand you're the one who found my brother?"
"Yes. I'm Darcy."
"You don't know how grateful we are, Darcy. We truly are, more than you could know, but weâve got it from here."
"Iâ¦" Emotion claws at my throat. "I only wanted to see if he was okay. To see if he made it."
"He's definitely hanging on but we won't be out of the woods for a while. I appreciate you checking in."
"Could I maybe see him?"
"I'm afraid they aren't letting anyone in his room right now and not sure when they will. If he wakes up, I'll let him know you stopped by. I have to go now but it was nice meeting you."
He turns around and walks away before I can answer. I fumble with the bottom of my jacket, not liking the way he said if. There was no hope in his voice. He doesn't think Caleb will pull through. Caleb is stronger than he assumes. He held on for this long. I can't see him giving up now. I only wish I was by his side.
Dragging my feet, I remove the bracelet from my pocket and walk over to the nurse who I spoke to before. She shifts her glasses on her nose, staring down at a clipboard. I tap her on the shoulder and her gaze meets mine. "Sorry to bother you again but could you give him this when he wakes up?"
Her lips press together and she loops her fingers in the chain. "Sure. I'll put it with his things in case I forget."
"Thank you."
She smiles and shoves the bracelet in her pocket before walking through a pair of double doors. I glance in her direction one last time, watching her walk down the hall through the glass window, tempted to follow her. They'd stop me before I reached him. I'll come back. I won't stop until he turns me away himself.
